Accessibility Statement

This statement explains how accessible the Innovation Forum × R1X hackathon microsite is, what we have done to make it accessible, and how to contact us if you have difficulty using it.

This is a DRAFT template prepared for legal review and to be completed following an accessibility audit. It is not legal advice.

Our commitment to accessibility

Global Innovation Forum Limited ("Innovation Forum") is committed to making its website accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of ability or technology. We want everyone to be able to find out about, and take part in, the Innovation Forum × R1X hackathon.

We recognise our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010, which requires us to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not placed at a substantial disadvantage. We aim to meet those responsibilities and to follow recognised good practice on web accessibility.

Scope of this statement

This statement applies to the Innovation Forum × R1X hackathon microsite (the Site), hosted at r1x.co.uk/public_hackathon/. This includes the home page and the challenges, registration, insights and sponsorship pages.

This statement does not cover third-party services linked from the Site (for example, the HubSpot registration form or external data sources), which have their own accessibility arrangements.

Standard we are aiming for

We are working towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 at level AA.

This Site is currently [partially conformant — CONFIRM after audit] with WCAG 2.2 level AA. "Partially conformant" means that some parts of the content do not yet fully conform to the standard. The conformance status will be confirmed once a full accessibility audit has been completed.

What we have done to make the Site accessible

We have taken the following steps to make the Site accessible:

  • built the Site using semantic HTML so that its structure can be understood by assistive technologies such as screen readers;
  • made the Site keyboard navigable, so it can be used without a mouse;
  • used self-hosted fonts to support consistent, reliable rendering of text;
  • designed the Site to be responsive, so it adapts to different screen sizes and mobile devices;
  • respected the user's "reduced motion" preference where applicable, so animations are limited for people who prefer less movement [CONFIRM];
  • avoided auto-playing audio or video; and
  • provided a no-JavaScript fallback for site navigation, so core navigation remains usable where JavaScript is unavailable.

Known limitations and areas to check

We are being open about the parts of the Site that may not yet be fully accessible. We know of, or are checking, the following:

  • Colour contrast. The brand green (#009540) is used in places on both light and dark sections. The contrast ratio of this colour against some backgrounds needs to be checked against WCAG 2.2 AA requirements and adjusted where necessary. [CONFIRM after audit]
  • Fixed navigation. The Site uses a fixed navigation "pill". On smaller screens this collapses to show fewer links, which may affect how easily some users can reach every page. [CONFIRM]
  • Content that relies on JavaScript. Some interactive content relies on JavaScript. A stated fallback exists for navigation; other JavaScript-dependent content should be reviewed to confirm an accessible experience without JavaScript. [CONFIRM]

We will prioritise addressing these issues following our accessibility audit.

The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 apply to public sector bodies. Innovation Forum and R1X are not public sector bodies, and so we understand that those regulations do not directly apply to this Site. We nevertheless aim to follow their spirit and to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA as good practice. [CONFIRM whether and how these regulations apply here.]
